Conservative or restorative dentistry encompasses the most frequent dental procedures, treating cavities. The damage to dental enamel and dentine is caused by the appearance of the cavity and it is necessary to diagnose and remove it as soon as possible so that it doesn’t damage the pulp. After the cavity has been removed, the damaged dental tissue will be replaced by a composite filling that imitates the shape of the damaged part so that the proper tooth function and aesthetic are retained. The fillings can also be applied in case of smaller damages due to trauma (tooth crack) or erosion of dental tissue.
Inlay, Onlay, Overlay
If the patient wishes and the dentist approves to, instead of a composite filling, put a ceramic one which is aesthetically more beautiful and more expensive, but it requires less polishing of the tooth’s surface, these ceramic fillings are truly the best choice. They only differ in sizes; inlay only covers the middle of the tooth, onlay the greater occlusal surface of the tooth and overlay covers both the surface and the back sides of the tooth, depending on the size of dentine’s defect. As opposed to composite fillings that are done immediately, these ceramic fillings require taking prints and sending them to the laboratory. It is cemented on the damaged part of the tooth on the next day when it arrives from the laboratory. Some of the characteristics that adorn them are normal and perfect nodules, the same colour as that of a natural tooth and translucency.
